Sonic 2 (Master System) Endings: An Interpretation
In Sonic 2 for the Sega Master System, there were two endings, the Good Ending(If you got the Chaos Emeralds), and the Bad Ending(If you didn’t get all of the Emeralds).
The idea that they were trying to convey was fuzzy, at best. But this is just one interpretation of each ending.
Let’s start with the bad!
In the ending, Sonic runs all alone while somber sounding music plays and it slowly shifts to nighttime. When the credits are done rolling, Sonic looks at the sky, and sees Tails in it. The Word “END” falls to the bottom of the screen. That’s it.
Sonic could not save Tails, so he died. The picture in the sky was either a image of Sonic’s making, or a sort of way for the inhabitants to remember Tails(TECHNOLOGY???).
There are four possible ways he could have died:
1. Dr. Robotnik killed him.
2. Dr. Robotnik forced Tails to figure out how to use the Chaos Emeralds, but he couldn’t, so Dr. Robotnik killed him.
3. Dr. Robotnik forced Tails to figure out how to use the Chaos Emeralds, but he couldn’t handle the immense power, and the Chaos Emeralds killed him.
4. Dr. Robotnik forced Tails to figure out how to use the Chaos Emeralds, and he did, so Dr. Robotnik killed him when he was done, thinking he was worthless now.
Sonic runs, just like the Bad Ending, but Tails is with him, uplifting music is playing(only in the Game Gear version!) and Sonic’s picture is in the sky as well.
Sonic saved Tails and the Chaos Emeralds from Dr. Robotnik’s clutches. The pictures may be made by the Chaos Emeralds(They’ve got a lot of power? I don’t know) to remember Sonic and Tails for their bravery(Not so sure about Tails, he just got kidnapped is all).
Sonic 2 for the Master System is a tough game, and it’s even tougher to get the Chaos Emeralds, so most people get the Bad Ending. In my opinion, the Bad Ending music is great if you want somber music.
